Hurricane Katrina
Following hurricanes Katrina and Rita - which struck the Gulf Area of the United States in August and September 2005 - more than 100 ETW service groups throughout North America responded by giving food, clothing, school supplies and other essential items. Extensive medical care and emotional support was also given. Volunteers visited relief sites and helped those who were displaced to locate one another, via the Internet.
On August 31 2005, just two days after Katrina struck, ETW launched Project Katrina Reunite, an effort to search and reunite missing children and their families, others who were displaced and had lost track of each other in the wake of the devastation.
With the help of over 150 volunteers, Project Katrina Reunite found and reunited several hundred missing persons. Project Katrina Reunite also included a subgroup that placed calls to individuals and shelters, in order to notify people that their loves ones had been located.
In December 2005, Embracing the World donated $1 million U.S.D. to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund. The donation was one of the largest the Fund - run by former U.S. Presidents George Bush, Sr., and William Jefferson Clinton-received from an NGO.
